National Center for Safe Routes to School and Schwinn Join Together for Bike to School Day Giveaway

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (March 17, 2016) ― The National Center for Safe Routes to School and Schwinn are teaming up for the third year in celebration of Bike to School Day. This year, the two organizations will host the Bike to School Day SmartStart Bike Share Giveaway providing 10 Schwinn SmartStart bikes and 20 Schwinn helmets to 10 schools across the US.

The National Center and Schwinn want to help get kids on bikes with a giveaway featuring Schwinn’s newly released kid’s bike line, SmartStart ( The new SmartStart bicycles are optimized to better fit a child’s body and riding needs.  Each bike is designed to offer children maximum comfort and confidence on two wheels, making learning to ride more fun. Ten schools across the country will be awarded SmartStart bikes and helmets to help support their bicycling safety activities.

“Schwinn is excited to continue the partnership with the National Center to help support bicycling and helmet safety with youth around the country,” said Milissa Rick, Senior Director of Marketing for Schwinn. “We’re eager for young students to begin riding our new SmartStart bicycles and develop the skills they need to become more confident bike riders.”

“We are happy to be working with Schwinn again this year and are pleased to be able to support communities in their efforts to teach safety skills and share the fun of biking,” said Nancy Pullen-Seufert, Director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School, which serves as the coordinating agency for National Bike to School Day.

During last year’s Bike to School Day giveaway, ten schools from Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Florida, Mississippi, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas received bikes and helmets. Schools were able to support many different kinds of bicycling programs including one program which established a Bicycle Safety Village for preschools, child care center and community-wide events.

Bike to School Day, May 4, 2016, is a national event that gives communities across the country the opportunity to join together in bicycling to school on the same day. Bike to School Day is part of the movement for year-round safe routes to school. Communities use the event to encourage biking (and walking) to school as a healthy way for kids and families to make their school commute fun and active.

Individuals who register their Bike to School Day event online are eligible to win one of the ten drawings. Each giveaway will include 10 Schwinn SmartStart bicycles and 20 Schwinn helmets to be awarded to a winning school.  Drawings will begin on Wednesday April 13th and winners will be announced weekly on the Safe Routes to School and Schwinn Facebook pages.
